"I'm just not sporty" - How a Growth Mindset Rewrites the Lie Your Brain Tells

Growth vs fixed mindset: software, not hardware

In Module One: The Predictive Brain, we explore how your brain works as a prediction machine, constantly forecasting how things will go based on the data it has collected. Module Two asks the next question: what kind of predictions is yours generating, and who installed them?



Psychologist Carol Dweck's decades of research describe two mindsets. A fixed mindset believes ability is unchangeable: you either have it, or you don't. A growth mindset believes ability is developed with time, practice and intelligent effort. Same brain, same person, very different predictions:

  • "I'm not strong" becomes "I'm not strong yet."

  • "I'm just not built for this" becomes "I can improve with practice."

  • "People like me don't do that" becomes "I can learn this."


If your brain is a computer, your mindset is the software deciding which programs run. This is the important part: you didn't choose your software. It was installed throughout your childhood by praise that celebrated talent over effort, by criticism that targeted who you were instead of what you tried, by every offhand comment like "girls don't do that."



The fixed mindset isn't a flaw; it's a protection strategy

This matters, so let me be clear: a fixed mindset is not a character defect. It's your nervous system keeping you safe. Not trying means no failure. Staying small means no judgment. Avoiding the class, the club, and the try-out means your identity is never at risk.



The cost is a loop that tightens with every lap. You predict you can't, so you don't try, so nothing changes, so your brain says: see? I was right. The setback stops being information and becomes a verdict. Not "that attempt didn't work" but "I don't work."



The growth mindset runs the same loop with different software. You try imperfectly, something small shifts, and your brain updates: "I did that. What else is possible?" Research shows this isn't just nicer to live with; it protects your well-being, lowers anxiety around challenge, and builds confidence that actually lasts, because your worth is no longer on trial every time you fail.



Why this hits women in sport hardest

From a young age, girls are told, directly and indirectly, that sport isn't feminine, strength isn't attractive, and their value lies in how they look, not what they can do. That's a fixed mindset installed at a cultural scale: it rewards looking right over becoming better. Every hour spent worrying about how you look in the gym is an hour of energy the growth loop never gets.


Look at figure skater Alysa Liu, who walked away from the sport at sixteen and came back on her own terms to win Olympic gold in 2026, skating for joy, not validation. Her words: "It's not a low point. It's a learning point." That's not superhuman talent. That's software you can install too.


One small step

You don't need a leap. Pick one thought you default to in sport, the one that sounds like a fact. Write it down. Now write it again with one word added: yet. Read both out loud and notice which one felt true and which felt like a stretch. That gap is not a wall. It's just an update; your brain hasn't collected the data for... yet.


You are not "not sporty." You are under-practised.
You are not incapable. You are untrained.
You are not behind. You are early in the process.
